Benefits of the culture of innovation

I’m not a huge fan of the process of innovation, but I am a big fan of the culture of innovation.

The goal of innovation is often stated as its end-state: a successful offering.

We can try to get there by two means:

  1. The process of innovation tries to copy a way the company has delivered successes before. Thinking that the magic is in the process — not the content (Steve Jobs, link).
  2. The culture of innovation focuses on how the organization works in order to create the environment for good content to thrive. The culture of innovation doesn’t force the process or differentiate between work and innovation (treating innovation as event).

What are some benefits of a Culture of innovation :

  1. The willingness to be surprised, the openness and ability to listen and the curiosity to explore even the smallest things
  2. Having ideas and drawing them out, making them tangible, creating a shared understanding motivating the organisation.
  3. Saying ‘yes’ (to believe in your colleagues that they are seeing something you are not)
  4. Stamina, perseverance, about building and improving and learning through the disappointments and the successes
  5. Killing ideas. Things that don’t work. No matter how hard you tried.
  6. Continuing to learn after launch (learning all the time, especially as it gets into the hands of real situations and real people)
  7. Believing in and capitalising on the talent, imagination and brilliance that resides in the culture, colleagues and teams.
