I'm not sure if I will answer your question, but in my experience the system leads to assumptions that leads to experiments. And we use those experiments to find our way forward.

We basically run our teams on assumptions where the outcome is the goal, not some kind of map or journey.

The important part though is that the experimentation is built into the execution. You build, test, learn and improve. You hardly every do experiments that don't offern any progress or value for the customer. You always have to do both.
